Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal, AgraIntro
A poem in white marble, Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world. Taj Mahal is situated in Agra, a city of north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The white marble monument stands on the banks of river Yamuna. Constructed 350 years ago by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, Taj Mahal is an immortal work of architecture. Even today the sheer beauty and magic of the Taj Mahal continues to attract people from all parts of the world. English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold had described the beauty of Taj as "Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor's love wrought in living stones."

About Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal, the most famous Mughal building, is in fact the most well preserved and architecturally beautiful monument in the world. It stands on an raised platform and four cupolas on four sides surround the central dome. The central dome is rises to a height of 213 ft and it is 58 ft in diameter. The interior and exterior of the Taj Mahal is decorated with inlaid design of flowers and calligraphy. The walls are paved with marble slabs and the verses from holy Qoran are inscribed on them. Precious stones such as diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires, corals and crystals have been used to decorate the walls. Taj Mahal is renowned for its Pietradura work, the work has been done with such wonderful skill that the lines of joints are virtually invisible.

Taj Mahal, AgraThe main graves of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are in a basement room, above them are the false tombs. Taj Mahal is amazingly graceful from almost any side but its close up detail is really fantastic. The building is situated in a large and beautifully laid out garden flanked by twin red sandstone mosques. The main entry to Taj is through a high red sandstone gateway inscribed with the verses from Qoran. Paths lead to the main structure which are divided by a long water course. The colour of Taj changes during different seasons and even at different hours of the day. The Taj appears pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden in full moon nights.

History
Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Queen Mumtaz Mahal died in Burhanpur at the time of giving birth to her 14th child. She was accompanying her husband in a campaign to crush a rebellion, When Mumtaz Mahal was alive she extracted the promise from the Emperor Shah Jahan to built a tomb in her memory. To fulfill the promise, Shah Jahan commenced the construction of Taj Mahal in 1631 and it was completed by the year 1654.

More than 20,000 people worked over a period of 22 years. The master architect was Ustad Isa, the renowned Islamic architect of his time. Apart from Indian workers, experts were brought from Central Asia and Europe. A fleet of above a thousand elephants required to transport the marble from Makrana of Rajasthan. Total cost of construction was 32 million Indian rupees, 68,000 US $ approx. Soon after the completion of Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and imprisoned at the Agra Fort. After the death of Shah Jahan in 1966, emperor Aurangzeb buried him in the Taj Mahal next to his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
