Extreme climate. Summers are hot during day time but nights are cool,
winters are chilly. Average temperature during summers are maximum 45°C
minimum 25°C. In winters temperature varies between 28°C and 4°C.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Corbett National Park is between January and mid-
June. The park is closed for tourists between 14th November and 16th June.
Summer is the best season to view wildlife and winter months from December
till February are ideal to see migratory birds.

About the Park
National Park is located in the foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas, close to
Ramnagar in Uttaranchal. Situated at an altitude of 385 m to 1200 m, the
Corbett National Park covers an area of 521 sq. kms comprising Kumaon and
Garhwal districts. Once a famous hunting preserve of the British, the park
was named after Jim Corbett, who made a great contribution in setting up
this park. Established in 1936, as the Hailey National Park, Corbett
National Park is the first national park of India. In the year 1973 Project
Tiger was launched in Corbett National Park with the help of WWF (World
Wildlife Fund) and the park became India's first national park under Project
The tiger population of India is decreasing rapidly but Corbett is only one
of the few parks where one can spot tigers. Corbett National Park is home to
a variety of flora and fauna and is best known for its population of Tigers,
Leopards and Elephants. Its varied topography comprises hills, riverine
areas, marshy depressions, plateaus and ravines. With a core area of about
330 sq. kms, the Corbett National Park consists of mixed deciduous forests,
sal forests and stretches of savannah grasslands. The lower areas of the
park are dominated by Sal trees.
Corbett National Park is a heaven for Tigers, besides the tiger the park is
home to a number of animal and bird species. In Corbett 50 mammals species,
580 bird species and 25 reptile species are found.
» Fauna :
Tiger is the main attraction of Corbett,
other faunal species include Leopards, Elephants, Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat,
Deer, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Wild Dog, Jackal,
Himalayan Palm Civet, Indian Gray Mongoose, Common Otter, Langur, Rhesus
Monkeys, Goat Antelopes Blacknaped Hare and Porcupine, Fish-eating Gharial
and the 'Mugger' Crocodile etc.
Avian Species :
Corbett National Park houses 580 bird species including
both migratory bird and resident birds. Among the popular bird species found
in the park are Duck, Bareheaded Goose, Graylag, Grepe, Sandpiper, Wagtail,
Egrets, Cormorants, Darters, Herons, Pied Kingfisher, Crested Serpent Eagle,
Fishing Eagle, Himalayan Grey Headed Fishing Eagle etc.
» Ramnagar :
Ramnagar is located in the rich farm
belt of Terai on the southeastern fringes of the deep forests. The town is
the main administrative centre for Corbett National Park and Project Tiger.
Ramnagar is popular fishing base camp, anglers can enjoy fishing at
Lochachaur, 15 kms north along the rive Kosi.
» Safaris :
Jeep Safari is the most
convenient way to travel within the park. Jeeps can be rented from Ramnagar,
from the KMVN Tourist Lodge and other travel agencies. Elephant rides can
also be arranged in Corbett National Park. A ride on the elephant back
provides a unique opportunity to closely see the wildlife. Private vehicles
are also allowed in the park.
Where to Stay
A wide range of accommodation is available in Dhikala, the main campsite of
Corbett. The cabins, forest rest houses, huts, tents, log hut dormitories
offer good accommodation facilities at reasonable rates. Apart from the
forest rest houses, accommodation is also available in private lodges and
resorts outside the park.
Nearest airport is Phoolbagh airport at Patnagar (50 kms). Indra
Gandhi International airport at Delhi (300 kms) is the nearest international
airport. Domestic airlines operate flights to Phoolbagh.
» Rail :
Ramnagar (50 kms) is the nearest railhead,
which has trains from Delhi, Lucknow and Moradabad.
» Road :
Corbett is connected by roads with
Ramnagar, Moradabad, Lucknow, Delhi and other important places of
Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh. There are daily buses to Ramnagar from
Moradabad, Ranikhet and Nainital. Delhi Transport Corporation runs semi
deluxe buses from Delhi to Ramnagar.
